Landscaping and the CA Drought

4/3/2018

CA Drought 2018
The drought continues in Southern California

Despite what seemed to be weeks long storms drenching the Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys in March, we have actually had a shortfall in measured precipitation in these areas. Using this seasons’ rainfall measurements taken at Lancaster, CA’s Fox Airfield, we can see that the Antelope Valley has only had approximately 30% of the rain necessary to be considered normal. We would have needed four times the amount of rain we saw just to
begin pulling out of our drought. In fact, the Antelope Valley and Santa Clarita are currently experiencing a moderate to severe drought. (March 27th U.S. Drought Monitor)

Water, a precious resource being wasted on natural lawns

On average, Californians’ outdoor landscaping soaks up 55%-70% of a households total water usage. Our weekend stealing, gopher breeding, maintenance headache of a lawn (2,000 s.f. average) is using more water than anything else we do at home. In order to keep your lawn alive, you will need to water approximately 1” of water per week. 1” of water equates to roughly one gallon of water per square foot. An average 2,000 square foot lawn will require over 100,000 gallons of water each year just to stay alive. We can double this number to keep it lush and green. To put that amount in perspective, you could fill the average 15’X30’ in ground pool eight times with that same amount of water. When you see huge, City water storage tanks as you’re driving around, they are rarely larger than 50,000 gallons or, 6 months worth of your lawns water needs.
The bottom line is our lawns are wasting tremendous amounts of water. Water that we simply do not have to spare.

Drought tolerant landscaping saves water

Beautiful, low maintenance, drought tolerant landscaping can help save enormous amounts of water. A well designed xeriscape, dryscape or, desertscape style landscape can be very attractive. With natural looking dry river beds, artificial grass, decomposed granite walkways, decorative rock and drought tolerant plants, your yard can be more visually appealing as well as lower maintenance. Your yard would no longer commandeer your weekends with mowing, edging and fertilizing. A drought tolerant yard requires only a few minutes of maintenance per month, not hours per week.
Our company often utilizes artificial turf in our designs to soften the sometimes rigid look of a drought friendly yard. EasyTurf synthetic lawns require no water at all. Really, no water. Not only can we create a professionally designed yard that you can love, we can help you reduce or completely eliminate the need for water, fertilizer and pesticides. Installing our exclusive EasyTurf fake grass ensures that you can have a drought tolerant landscape while retaining a natural, lush green look and feel. Our “Backyards just got better” concept creates drought tolerant, family friendly yards. We can help you do your part to save this resource and look great doing it.
